Abandoned Boat

October 9, 2011

This abandoned boat was something I especially made the effort to visit when in Dungeness. Heavily abused in LightRoom and not perfectly 😦 Kind of happy with the result but really need to learn what I should do with it in LightRoom 🙂

Have a great week…

  1. You know, I don’t think you abused anything here, you seem to have used Lightroom just right.

The first thought I had when I saw this photo was – ‘wow, it’s moving straight to me!’ and I think the first reaction is all that matters.

I definitely like it. The only thing I would personally try to get rid off are those white patches to the left and maybe some above the boat.

    • Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I think that my use of the brushes in Lightroom gave the boat a halo effect… 🙂

  2. Love this photo. Such atmosphere. Really good. 🙂

  3. Very nice.

  4. Wonderful selective focus and tones. I think the processing is terrific. But what do I know?

    • From the photos on your blog… quite a bit! 🙂

  5. “Kind of happy with the result”? It’s gorgeous!

  6. Great picture. Great moody atmosphere.

  7. I think you did excellent. No signs (at least what I can see in this small picture). I think you have caught the atmosphere amazingly well. Great work!

  8. This is wonderful Nigel. A very strong, dramatic image. Well done!

  9. Great shot Nigel. I like the way your processing captures the mood. Very fitting for the title.

  10. I really like it. If you did something wrong, I can’t see it. It’s a great image. Very dramatic.

  11. Excellent composition, so well suited to mono. Very dramatic.

  12. Love this! Super dramatic and moody 🙂

  13. I also like the processing and the tones you used….but more than that, great shot in the first place ! 🙂

  14. Very dramatic image Nigel. I love it! Looks like the challenge you had with this image was that you painted in the exposure reduction in the sky. It looks like a great effect, but it’s really hard to get clean edges with a brush. I’m no LR expert – I didn’t even know you could do that in LR! If you have access to PS though, this would be a quick adjustment using a curves adjustment layer and a mask.

    • Hi Mike. Yes, that’s correct. I find using the brush in lightroom to be quite tedious. I haven’t got photoshop because I didn’t see the need for it because of all that lightroom offers, however, for things like this, photoshop is probably a much better tool to use. I do have essentials, maybe I should see how that would have done with the work I needed to do for this.

  15. Thanks all for the likes, comments and feedback… very much appreciated 🙂

  16. Wow – Very dramatic!

  17. Very Nice shot..

  18. This is a great shot. I recognise that boat very well 🙂 I like how the clouds give depth to the picture. Both times I’ve been it’s been virtually clear skies so I’ve not been able to get such atmospheric shots as this.

    • 🙂 – Actually the look of this photo was inspired by that image of yours! 🙂 Sorry, I completely forgot to mention that!

  19. very nice nigel!

  20. Very nice Nigel.
I like the “emptiness” mood/feel in this shot.

  21. Hauntingly beautiful, Nigel…
you’ve really got something special here…

  22. Beautiful shot, Nigel. Love the composition and mood. I’m not personally acquainted with LightRoom but, in my humble opinion, the processing on this is very effective and quite lovely.
